Investigations into tortoise and freshwater turtle trade in Vietnam

A research report detailing investigations into the tortoise and freshwater turtle trade in Vietnam. The study focused on local and export use of live animals and products. Trade and market surveys were conducted throughout Vietnam during July-November 1993. Efforts were made to understand the trade routes employed and to estimate trade volumes and value. The study revealed turtle collection points in all the areas visited. Laos and Cambodia are important sources. The researchers found that Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi were the two biggest centres of the trade, and that most (90%) of freshwater turtles and tortoises were exported to China. The authors conclude with recommendations.
