Regional Policy Trends for Strengthening the Inclusion of Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) in Public Governance

This chapter shows that in recent years, in particular since the implementation of the SWITCH-Asia Regional and NPSC, SCP has become increasingly integrated into Asia’s public governance frameworks, such as overarching national development plans and strategies. In addition, countries in the region are prioritising a shift in the social norms and behaviours that lead to unsustainable consumption, promoting traditional concepts of sufficiency, and adopting newer concepts of green growth. On the production side, the region will continue to make advancements in resource efficient technologies and practices. Overall, it is clear that the region will require greater nationally-focused research, capacity development, and overall policy support to ensure SCP’s implementation, especially at the local level. While national policy commitments on SCP increase, ensuring that policy support is customised to national contexts and to the challenges of local policy enforcement will guarantee that measurable progress can be made in achieving the SDGs on the ground.
