Serial Offender: Vietnam’s continued imports of illegal Cambodian timber

This report details how investigators found that while the nature of the illicit trade had changed, there are still huge volumes of illegally logged and traded Cambodian timber flowing across the border to Vietnam, despite Vietnam’s preparations for the VPA. Vietnamese importers declared imports of 178,000m of logs and sawn timber worth nearly $76 million between October 2017 and March 2018, a vast majority (if not all) of which is illegal. As detailed in the report, the actual volume of this trade may be significantly higher as there are reasons to believe not all imports are being registered with Vietnam Customs or being aggregated in its statistics.
